Yes, you can sell an Advance train ticket on SaveMyFare if your plans change and you can no longer travel. Advance tickets are non-refundable with the original operator, but they can be passed to another person as long as the ticket is unused and the travel date is still in the future.
What makes an Advance ticket eligible to sell
Not every Advance ticket can be listed. Before you create a listing, check the following.
- The ticket must be unused. A ticket that has already been scanned at a barrier or on a train cannot be resold.
- The travel date must be in the future. Tickets for journeys that have already departed cannot be listed.
- The ticket must be in a shareable format — a PDF, e-ticket email, barcode image, or collection reference.
- The ticket must not be tied to a named passenger in a way that prevents transfer. Most standard Advance tickets do not carry a passenger name and can be passed on freely.
If your booking includes a railcard discount, the buyer will need to carry the same railcard type on the day of travel. State this clearly in your listing so buyers can check their eligibility before purchasing.
What types of Advance ticket can be sold
Advance tickets issued by National Rail operators — including Avanti West Coast, LNER, CrossCountry, TransPennine Express, and others — are generally eligible. Tickets bought through third-party booking platforms such as Trainline, Omio, or the operator's own app follow the same rules, provided the ticket can be accessed and shared in full.
- Single Advance tickets are the most common type listed on SaveMyFare.
- Return Advance tickets can be listed — either the full return or just the outward or return leg if the other has already been used.
- Tickets with a reserved seat include the seat reservation by default. Pass the seat details to the buyer along with the ticket.
What cannot be sold
- Anytime and Off-Peak tickets — these are usually refundable directly with the operator, so resale is rarely necessary.
- Season tickets and Flexi Season tickets cannot be transferred.
- Tickets tied to a specific named passenger through a loyalty scheme or operator account that cannot be reassigned.
- Tickets where the barcode has been partially scanned, damaged, or is no longer readable.
How to sell your Advance ticket on SaveMyFare
Log in, go to Sell, and enter the route, travel date, and ticket details. Upload a photo or scan of the ticket for verification, then set your asking price below the original face value. Once the listing is approved, it goes live for buyers searching that route and date.
When a sale completes, you have a short window to transfer the ticket to the buyer — typically by forwarding the e-ticket email or sharing the PDF. Payment is released once the transfer is confirmed.
